The simple pleasure of a mountain vacation is a precious rarity these days. And when you finally do find a rustic mountain resort, it's often too outdated to be appealing. Or too popular. Since the legendary Crater Lake Lodge - the most well known of the facilities near Crater Lake National Park in Oregon - is often booked solid in summer, consider basing a vacation in southern Oregon's Cascades from one of two other restored historic accommodations, each less than an hour from the park.

Some 28 miles south of Crater Lake, Prospect Historical Hotel has been catering to Crater Lake travelers for more than a century, since the days when the lake was a two-day journey from Medford and Prospect made a perfect layover. An ambitious restoration of the hotel was completed in 1989. Rooms are small but nicely furnished with antiques; they're named for luminaries in local history and such celebrity guests as Jack London and Zane Grey. Owners Mike & Jo Turner arrived in 1998 and have turned the hotel's restaurant into the best dinner house between Crater Lake and Medford; prix fixe meals ($17) including an appetizer, simple but winning entrees' such as prime rib and lemon-dill roasted salmon, and homemade dessert.

Prospect Historical Hotel. 10 rooms, open year-round; restaurant open May through September. 391 Mill Creek Dr., Prospect; www.prospecthotel.com, (800) 944-6490 or 541-560-3661.
